Overview - Program Capabilities

How a Nassau Works
The Nassau is a common form of golf competition and wagering.  It is conducted on a match play basis with separate "matches" for the Front Nine, Back Nine, and the Overall 18 holes.  Thus, three separate matches between two participants are scored within the competition.  The amount won/lost by each participant is determined by applying specified Nassau Amounts to the match results.  For example, for a single match, if the Nassau Amount is the same for the Front Nine/Back Nine/Overall 18 at $5, and a player wins the Front Nine 3-up and loses the Back Nine 2-down (thus winning the Overall 18 by 1-up), he/she would win a total of $5: + 5$ for the Front Nine, - $5 for the Back Nine, and + 5$ for the Overall 18.

Some Nassau's involve "Presses."  A Press is an additional match that is initiated when the original match reaches a point where a player/team is behind by a designated number of holes.  The program includes options for Automatic Back Nine Presses and Multiple Presses on both the Front and Back Nines -- both at a "Holes Down" value that you specify.  The Nassau Amount for the Press is the Front/Back wager amount.  (Presses are not applicable for 18-hole-only matches.)

How a Round Robin Works
The Round Robin format simply means that each participant in an event is involved in a separate match against every other participant (that is, Everybody Plays Everybody)**.  For example, if a standard event has 30 participants, each participant will be involved in 29 matches.  The program automatically determines all match results based on the hole-by-hole scores for each participant.  Thus, you can conduct a very interesting event that would be very difficult to score without a computer and the program.

** Participants can be either individual players or teams of players.  In both cases you identify the participant with a Name -- either a Player Name or a Team Name.  Note that the program does not do best ball calculations for Teams.  If your event involves teams you must determine the best ball hole scores and enter them to the program.  If a team competition is on a Net basis you should specify a Gross event but enter the best ball Net scores.

The program provides two optional variations of the basic Round Robin format:

-- "One Against the Field" where a single player or team plays matches against all other players/teams

-- "Swing Team" where a designated 2-player team plays matches against teams formed from every 2-player
combination of individual players.  For this event the program does do team better-ball calculations.

Another variation for which the program provides the basic results information is described in the "Another Event Idea" section at the end of this Help Topic.

Features and Capabilities
In a nutshell, the Nassau Round Robin gives you the following capabilities:

-- The event field may consist of any number of players or teams.

-- Either or both of Gross and Net scoring can be used in the same event

-- You specify Nassau Wager Amounts for Gross and/or Net scoring.  These amounts can be the same
or different for Gross and Net if both are used.

-- You have a choice of using or not using Presses.  Two types of Presses are available, both of which take
effect at a Holes Down number you specify: a Back 9 Only Press or Multiple Presses on Both the Front 9
and Back 9.  The Multiple Preeses option is not available for the Swing Team event; this event uses the
Back 9 Only Press when you choose to use a press,

-- For Net Events you may choose between two methods of Handicap Strokes Allocation:

                  - Differential Method: Lower handicap player plays from scratch (zero handicap).  Higher handicap player
receives a number of handicap strokes equal to the difference between the players' full handicaps.

                  - Full Allocation Method: Both players receive a number of strokes equal to their full handicap.

-- Skins Games can be conducted either in conjunction with other competitions or independently.

-- Event Specifications and Course Information (Hole Pars and Handicap Hole Ratings) are provided via
easy-to-use display screens.  Your Course Information is saved and can be reused or easily modified
             for future events.

-- Formation of the player field is done automatically by the program as you enter scores for each player
or team.  You provide each player or team name (and Handicap for Net events) when the player or team
             is scored.

-- Hole-by-hole score entry is accomplished easily on a fill-in-the-blanks basis with automatic movement
from hole to hole.  Re-scoring, if required, is as easy as entering the player/team name again at any
time and providing the changed hole scores.  The program automatically discards the old scores and
             uses the new scores.

Results Displays and Reports
All event results are available as both scrollable screen displays and printed reports.  The screen displays are illustrated in the Results Help Topic.  The printed reports are illustrated in the User Guide.  The following are provided:

-- Event Results: A summary of the overall event results by player or team, including the total number
of matches Won/Lost/Tied on each Nassau "leg" and the total money amount won/lost.

-- Individual Player Results: A separate summary of each player/team that shows the individual match
results against every other player/team in the field.

-- Hole-by-Hole Scores: A listing of all player scores sorted in low-score to high-score sequence.  Both
Gross and Net reports are available for use in Stroke Play competitions.

-- Skins Game Results: Shows Skins winners and can optionally include financial results.  Both Gross
             and Net reports are available.

-- One Player/Team Against The Field: This is a special results option for matches between a single
player or team and the rest of the field.  The report content is the same as that for Individual Player
Results except that only one report is produced -- that for the designated "Wheel" player/team.

-- Swing Team Results: An overall Event Results Report and a Match Results Report similar to the
Individual Player Results, both on a team basis.

Another Event Idea
One of our customers has suggested the following event format for which the program provides the basic information.

-- All Participants (Individuals or Teams) pay a specified entry fee, the total of which becomes the Purse.
(For example, 50 players at $20 each creates a Purse of $1,000)

-- 18-Holes-Only Matches are played on an everybody-plays-everybody basis.

-- The total number of Matches Won is counted from the program results.  The value of each Match Win is
calculated via:  Purse / Total Matches Won = Win Value

-- From the program's everybody-plays-everybody results the number of Matches Won by each participant
is multiplied by the Win Value to determine the Payout for each participant.

Obviously, some by-hand calculations are required for the Win Value and the Payout for each participant, but the program gives you the information you need to provide event results.  It would seem that the best Event Specifications for this competition are 18-Hole-Only matches without Presses.  The program's everybody-plays-everybody results will show the Front 9 and Back 9 match results and the standard financial results, but these can be ignored.

This event format is attractive for those cases where you wish to limit the financial exposure of the participants to the entry fee.
