Adding New Players / Changing Player Information
Adding new players to your handicap database is as easy as clicking the New Player button on the Player Maintenance Screen and completing the information on the screen illustrated below. The same screen is used for adding new players and changing existing player information when accessed via the Change Info button on the Player Maintenance screen.

Several of your entries on this screen are self-explanatory, but note the following about the entries:
-- Player ID: Numeric Player IDs are assigned automatically by the program in increments of 10 and consist of five characters. Allowing the program to assign IDs is convenient and ensures that duplicate IDs will not be created. However, if you wish you can assign your own Player IDs by overriding the ID assigned by the program; if you do, be careful about duplicates. The IDs assigned by the program are numeric (numbers only). If you assign your own IDs they may numeric or alphabetic, or a combination. However, if you are using the Player Scores Entry feature for direct player entry of scores and are using the SportsWare ScorePad keyboard, IDs must be numeric only. (Note that we have discontinued provision of the ScorePad keyboard beginning in January, 2010. Use of a mouse or a touch screen display provides a convenient user interface.)
-- Hcp. Type: This field is used to designate whether a player's primary handicap basis is 18 holes or 9 holes. For 18-hole players (the default) you can leave the field blank or enter the number 18; for 9-hole players you must enter the number 9. GHM supports both 18-hole and 9-hole handicapping. For players designated as 9-hole players the program maintains both 9-hole and 18-hole handicaps according to the respective rules for each in the USGA Handicap System and provides separate printed reports for each type. However, when a player is designated as a 9-hole player, the handicap information displayed on the Player Maintenance Screen and in the Player Scores Entry feature will be the 9-hole information; the 18-hole information is maintained and provided in reports, but not displayed.
-- Hcp. Card: This field simply designates whether or not a Handicap Card is to be generated for the player via the program's handicap card features. Leaving the field blank or entering the letter "Y" will produce a handicap card; enter the letter "N" if you do not wish to produce a handicap card for the player.
-- Home Course: The default course (set of tees) for all players is Course Number 1 as defined in your Course Definitions that are part of System Parameters. To use this default leave the field blank or enter the number 1.
If a player plays regularly from a set of tees other than Course Number 1, enter the Course Number for that set of tees. When you do the player's displayed handicap information and the ratings for entering scores will be from the Course Number you specify.
You can also enter a Course Number of Zero (0) to specify that a player does not have a regular set of tees from which he/she plays. In this case, when a score is posted by the player in Player Scores Entry, a screen is presented on which the player can select the course on which the round was played. In Staff Entry of scores there's a Change Course button on the Add Scores screen that can be used to select the course played.
-- Player Entry Access Code: This code is a security feature of the Player Scores Entry feature. When it exists it must be entered by the player in order to post a score. The code is usually provided by the player himself/herself. It's appearance here is primarily for informing players of their code if they've forgotten it. However, the code may be assigned here if desired.
-- Address Section: This section of the screen is visible only if you've specified in your System Parameters that an Name/Address Database is to be maintained. If the section is displayed, completion of the information is optional on a player-by-player basis.
-- Group Codes Section: Group Codes is an optional feature of the program whereby you can define "subsets" of your handicap database for special groups of players in addition to the Men/Ladies groups that are maintained automatically by the program. When used it provides a capability to perform handicap recalculations and print reports on a selective basis for these special groups. The most common use of the feature is for certain classes of players (e.g. Seniors, Juniors) and leagues. You define the names of Group Codes in your System Parameters. Designation of a player as part of a Group Code is done by simply clicking the check box for the appropriate code(s). Note that a player may be a part of multiple Group Codes.
